Tokyo, Japan

It has been nearly a year since we traveled to Japan and I never posted ay pictures from our trip because soon after our trip my laptop came down with a virus.

I took well over a thousand photos, here are some of snapshots from our days in Tokyo. We got to catch up with my husband's friend from university as well as her family and at the end of our trip we all celebrated our daughter's first birthday together.

We had a wonderful time in Japan and we would love to go back to see more!

Finland 6.12

I was hoping I would be able to blog regularly during my Finland visit. That did not happen, I managed to keep myself busy with other stuff. Here's a quick recap in pictures.

Ett litet bildkollage från senaste Finlandsresan. Tyvärr blev det inget av det mer regelbundna bloggande som jag hade hoppats på. Istället blev de bland annat en eller annan kopp kaffe me brorsan, lite shoppande och träffar med kompisar.

The birthday party sook... and an ode to all mothers

Our baby girl turns one later this month and we did not want to have a massive birthday bash for her. A couple of girls in the playgroup at our compound are also celebrating their birthdays in May so we decided to combine our efforts and have a joint party for the girls!

The party was a great success, thanks to my great co hostesses and all our lovely guests, big and small. But... has anyone had their eyes well up when everyone is singing "Happy Birthday"? I kid you not, that happened to me!

I really don't know what came over me. Maybe it is sadness over the baby year that is soon coming to an end. It might not have been the easiest year, but it has been the most life changing and rewarding experience ever! Maybe it was because I was able to celebrate this occasion with a group of great people. Women (and their adorable children) from all corners of the world. Women who are all so different, but who all possess so many admirable qualities. Women who make me think "How on Earth do they do it?"

Thank you to you all, and thank you for making this party such a great success! But must of all, thank you for being part of our lives!

A very happy Mothers Day to all mums out there! You all deserve a pat on your back, because you are doing the most difficult job in the world: being a Mum!

Ten thousand and one thank yous to you all! My blog has now hit just over ten thousand page views! Not a lot it may seem, but for me it's a big deal for a blog that was started just so that i could update my family and friends all around the world about what we are up to!

Tiotusen och ett tack till er alla! Nu har min blogg setts över tiotusen gånger. Det är väl i sig inte så mycket, men för mej är det inte så illa med tanke på att jag startade bloggen endast för att min familj och alla mina vänner i olika delar av världen kan följa med vad vi håller på med.

A not so happy Australia Day

I am sad to see what is happening over in Australia, especially in my former home state of Queensland. One area was hit by five tornadoes in a day and an ex tropical cyclone is causing severe weather and flooding in the very same areas that flooded so badly just over two years ago.

I am thinking about all my friends over there and I am hoping that they will stay safe.

2012 - The year of the family

2012 was indeed a year of the family, not only did we add to our own by welcoming a little baby girl, but we also got to spend lots of time with our parents, siblings, aunties, uncles, cousins and lots of other relatives. I have to say that I use the term family very loosely and in my understanding of the word I also include lots of my wonderful friends. We are blessed with such great friends both near and far, I have said it before but I will say it again, many of them are so close that we consider them family!

Here is a look at 2012 in pictures, oh what a year it was...

2012 kallar jag för familjens år. Inte bara för att vi själva blev stolta föräldrar till en underbar lite flicka, utan också för att vi kunde tillbringa en hel del tid med en massa släktingar, föräldrar, syskon, mostrar och fastrar, kusiner mm. Sen ska jag tillgga att jag använder uttrycket familj väldigt generöst, jag inkluderar också en hel drös av underbara vänner i denhär kategorin. Vänner som bor både nära och fjärran, och som vi anser vara en del av vår familj!

Bring on autumn

Only 14 more days to go until we travel to Finland. I am so looking forward to our daughter meeting her maternal grandparents, her uncle and the rest of my extended family and friends! I know for a fact that there's a bunch of people waiting for us too!

I'm also looking forward to the Finnish autumn weather, strange as it may seem. I'm just getting tired of daytime temperatures of 40+ degrees day in and day out. So bring on rain, dark nights and leaves in a multitude of colours!

Det är exakt två veckor tills vi reser till Finland. En resa som jag ser fram emot av många orsaker. Främst för att vår dotter äntligen får träffa sina morföräldrar, morbror och en massa andra släktingar och vänner. Det är många därhemma som också ser fram emot detta första möte!

Å andra sidan ser jag också fram emot det finska höstvädret. Jag vet att det inte låter klokt, men så är det när dagstemperaturen stigit över 40 grader varje dag i flera veckors tid. Jag kommer att njuta av regnet, mörka kvällar och granna höstlöv!

My first ever baby shower

A week ago I got to experience my first ever baby shower, it also happened to be my own! When I was still living in Finland the whole concept of baby showers did not exist, the same goes for Australia.

Here in Saudi Arabia I am blessed with friends and neighbours that come from loads of different places.  One such lovely friend is Heather, she's originally from Australia but quite a few years ago she crossed "the Ditch" and moved to the US, since the past year or so she lives here in Saudi Arabia. Heather loves throwing a party and what better reason than the arrival of a new baby! When she called me up and offered to throw me a baby shower it seemed that she already had the whole thing pretty much half planned (with thanks to her partner in crime Jenny). All I was asked to do was to pick a date and time and show up at her house accordingly!

The party was just great and I was so touched by the fact that Heather and Jenny had gone through all the hard work to arrange it all. I was also completely blown away by the kindness and generosity of everyone. It is hard to imagine that I have known all of these people for only a year, many of them even shorter than that, because in that time this community of expat wives have become a great network of support. I have had countless of offers for ANY type of assistance, I also had one friend offer to be there for the birth in case my husband can't take the heat!!! I feel so blessed to have all these people in my life, it definitely makes living away from your friends and family a whole lot easier!

Heather had even written a poem for the occasion. Something that she said is "nothing much" and "won't make the internet". I told her I'll make sure it makes the WWW by posting it on my blog:

A sweet little baby is soon on it's way.
For Adnan and Susie.
Excitement is building, the nursery is set.
Is it really that long in Australia they met.

So now here in Saudi we sit and we wait.
The news we are sure it will travel.
A new little playmate to play in the sand.
All over the compound called Zamil.

Enjoy every moment, we know that you will.
A baby is such a sweet joy.
But please let us know, soon we hope... we can't wait

Reading it now a week later still brings tears to my eyes and I really had to make an effort to hold the tears back many times on the day.

I would like to express a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has there on the day (and also to those that could not be there). My husband and I are extremely grateful for all the gifts that we received and for all the kind words along the way. We have so many reasons to feel truly blessed, alhamdulillah.

 För en vecka sen fick jag för första gången uppleva en "baby shower", en fest för vår baby som är på väg. Det var första gången jag varit med om en fest av dethär slaget eftersom detta koncept inte riktigt existerar i varken Finland eller Australien.


Allt fixades av min vän Heather som älskar allt som har med arrangemang av fester att göra, men i synnerhet en som har med en baby att göra. Med i planeringen hade hon Jenny och allt jag blev ombedd att göra var att välja datumet och klockslaget och infinna mej hemma hos Heather enligt det.


Det var en underbar fest och jag blev väldigt rörd av all omtanke och arbete som hade lagts ner på att fixa festen. Dessutom kan jag inte med ord tacka alla för deras generositet, inte bara när det gäller gåvor utan också för alla erbjudanden om hjälp som vi har fått. En vän har tom. erbjudit sig att komma med på förlossningen om det visar sej att min man inte klarar trycket! Det är svårt att fatta att jag känt dessa människor i ett år, de flesta av dom ännu kortare tid än så.


Heather hade tom skrivit en dikt åt oss, även om hon försökte underskatta det hela genom att kalla den för "ingenting".  Själv blev jag nästan rörd till tårar vid flera tillfällen under festen och både jag och min man känner oss oerhört välsignade för allt som vi har fått ta del av.

A year ago today

It has been a year since we left Australia in order to start our adventure in the Middle East. It's incredible how fast the past year has gone. While Australia is not the my native country, there are things that I do miss.

My friends would come first on the list, it took me a while to develop a network of friends in Australia, and just as I had done that it was time to leave.

I also miss the Australian people in general, they are so easygoing and and friendly, whether you know them or not. Customer service in Australia is also something quite different to what you experience here, it just seems people are not really committed and they do not care whether they have made you feel happy or not.

Parks. I used to laugh to myself, because in Australia, especially on the Gold Coast where we lived, they had parks everywhere. Big and small. If there was a just a small patch of grass, a bench and a tree it would be called a park! These parks would be clean, really clean. Over here there are very few parks and especially during the weekend they are not very clean because people leave their rubbish everywhere!

Nice, cozy coffee shops. The ones where you can sit for a looooong time because it really feels like an extension of our own living room. One of my favourites was Gov's Espresso, coffee shops here are mainly of the American/British franchise kind...

These are just a few things of the top of my head. I am hoping to go back to Australia for a visit at some point, but I have no idea when that would be...

Det är nu ett år sen vi flyttade från Australien till Mellanöstern. Ett år som har gått otroligt fort! Trots att Australien inte är mitt hemland är det en hel del saker som jag saknar. Främst av allt mina vänner, men också det australiensiska folket över huvudtaget.


Jag saknar också alla fina, gröna, rena parker! Jag längtar också tillbaka till Australiens cafekultur. Det finns så många mysiga och trevliga cafeer, men här i Saudiarabien får man nöja sej med "stämningen" som erbjuds av ett amerikanst/brittiskt franchiseföretag...


Jag hoppas att vi gör ett besök till Australien i något skede, men just nu är det inte aktuellt tyvärr. Det finns ju en massa andra ställen man vill se!

Scandinavian Sunday: Lilla Loppan

Jag ska försöka mej på att ha ett återkommande tema här på bloggen. Eftersom allt skandinaviskt ligger mej varmt om hjärtat så blev valet enkelt, temat blir Skandinavisk Söndag. Dessutom så är det som tema lagom flummigt, så jag kan skriva om mat, design, resor - ja allt skandinaviskt helt enkelt.


Idag tänkte jag dela med mej av ett projekt som hållit (och förhoppningsvis kommer att hålla i fortsättningen också) min vän Ulrika sysselsatt. Hon har nämligen gjort slag i saken och ska nu öppna en liten butik för barnkläder. Butiken heter Lilla Loppan och den öppnar i Pargas den 17 mars, klockan 10! Butiken har en egen Facebook-sida som ni hittar här. Butiken ligger på Jonsängsvägen 4 och kommer att ha öppet tisdag-fredag kl 17-19 och lördag kl 10-15.Nätbutiken kommer att öppna lite senare i år. 

Butiken kommer att sälja mestadels skandinaviska märken, i synnerhet såna som inte säls av så många andra finska butiker. Till urvalet hör bland annat Phister & Philina, Creamie och Racoon.


Jag är jätteglad för min kompis skull, dethär här hon drömt om att göra länge och jag är säker på att hennes butik kommer att bli en succe! Jag väntar på att jag själv ska få besöka butiken, tillsvidare får jag nöja mej med att skicka in en agent i form av min mamma! Så om ni har vägarna förbi Pargas, titta då gärna in och hälsa från mej!

This week I wanted to highlight a project that is keeping my friend Ulrika very busy! She is opening up a children's clothing store called Lilla Loppan (Little Flea, which is sort of a term of endearment in Swedish) in her home town of Pargas. You can find the shop's Facebook page here. The shop is opening this coming Saturday, which means that she is really busy with putting everything in place. It is something that she has been dreaming about for such a long time, it is so great to see dreams come true! I wish my friend all the best, I am confident that her shop will be a success!

2011 roundup

I have been planning on doing a roundup of the year 2011 for the looongest time. I realise it seems a bit odd to post something like this in February, but I really wanted to do this - if only for my own record :)


Jag hade planerat en bildkavalkad av året 2011 ren länge, MYCKET länge. Det känns kanske lite underligt att jag lägger upp dethär nu, men jag ville göra det - om så bara för min egen räkning.

In January I spent a lot of time in my favourite city of all times: Sydney. My husband's work  meant that he was moved to Sydney for a few months and while being apart was killing me, we did mak up for lost time during the weekends.

I januari blev det många visiter till min favoritstad: Sydney. Pga arbetet var min man baserad här under tre månader och jag flög ner så ofta jag kunde!

In February I bought myself a new camera, a Canon 500D. I still need to figure out how to make the best use of it and I have been practising by taking the oddest photos ever since!

I februari gjorde jag äntligen slag i saken och köpte mej en ny kamera, en Canon 500D. Ända sen dess har jag övat genom att ta en massa konstiga foton ur alla världens vinklar, jag måste ju öva!
 

 In March we visited Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast, a destination that had been on my to do list ever since arriving in Australia back in 2005. My earlier post about this an be found here.

I mars körde vi till Sunshine Coast och besökte Australia Zoo, dethär stället hade varit på min "att göra" lista ända sen jag först landade i Australien år 2005. Mer om besöket här.

In April we were off to Saudi Arabia, for the coming few years at least. The above shows about a tenth of all the stuff we brought with us.

I april bar det iväg till Saudiarabien, för de kommande åren åtminstone. Bilden viasr ca 10 procent av allt det pick och pack vi tog med oss från Australien.

I started taking Arabic classes in May. I have always loved learning new languages, this one is proving to be a real challenge.

I maj började jag ta privatlektioner i arabiska. Under årens lopp har jag studerat flera olika språk, jag måst säga att det här är det mest utmanande språket hittills.

In June I headed back to Finland after being away for nearly two years! To say that it was GREAT to be back would be the understatement of the year. During my six week visit I got to spend a lot of quality time with family and friends. Posts from my visit here, here, here and here.

I juni var det dags för Finlandsbesök, det hade gått nästan två år sen min senaste visit! Att påstå att det var helt fantastiskt är att underdriva enormt. Under mina sex veckor i Finland blev det mycket till tillsammans med familj och vänner. Jag delade med mej av mina upplevelser här, här, här och här.

July was probably one of the best months of the year. All this because I got to spend a few days in summery Finland with my beloved husband. Bliss. The best month of the year was still to come.

När jag tänker tillbaka så var juli säkert den nästbästa månaden under 2011. Jag fick spendera några underbara sommardagar i Finland med min älskade man. Lycka. Men ännu hade vi årets bästa månad framför oss.

Nearly the whole month of August was taken up by the fasting month, Ramadan. More about fasting here.

Så gott som hela augusti togs upp av fastemånaden Ramadan. Mera om att fasta här.

September was the month that made dreams come true. We had a wonderful stay in Turkey, you can read about it here, here and here. I finally got to go on the hot air balloon ride that I had dreamed of for years!

Little did we know then that there was an free-rider on board. Two days after returning home we got to know that we are expecting our first child.

September var månaden då drömmar blev verklighet. Vi hade en helt underbar semester i Turkiet, läs mera här, här och här. Äntligen fick jag åka varmluftsballong, något jag drömt om i flera år!


Vad vi inte visste då var att vi hade en liten fripassagerare med på resan. Två dagar efter att vi kommit hem fick vi veta att vi väntar vårt första barn!

In October I was thinking about family and friends a lot. This card reminds me of a special someone and these words have helped me through some really rough times in the past few years. Gotta love friends that can change your day even if they are miles away!

I oktober kom jag på mej själv med att tänka mycket på familj och vänner. Dethär kortet påminner mej om en mycket god vän och dessa ord har hjälpt mej genom många svåra stunder under de gångna året. Vänner som har förmågan att pigga upp ens dag fastän de befinner sej tusentals kilometer bort är helt enkelt oumbärliga!

In December I was off to Finland - again. One of the advantages of our relocation to the Middle East is that traveling anywhere is so much quicker. Instead of a 30 hour trip to reach Finland from Australia, we are looking at a "mere" 13 hours or so.

I december var det dags för ännu ett Finlandsbesök. Att vara baserad i mellanöstern betyder att flygtiden till vilket ställe som helst har förkortats betydligt. Istället för en trettio timmars resa mellan Australien och Finland så befinner jag mej på finsk mark efter "endast" tretton timmar!


I had a quite eventful and blessed year in 2011 and I am forever grateful for the good things that have come my way during this past year. I hope everyone had a great year in 2011, and if not, I hope that your 2012 is better. I know some of my friends are facing challenges and hard times and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

2011 var ett mycket händelserikt år för min del och jag är oerhört tacksam för allt det goda som jag har blivit delaktig av under det gångna året. Jag hoppas att alla hade ett bra år 2011, om inte, så hoppas jag att 2012 blir ett bättre år. Jag vet att en del av mina vänner kommer att ha en del svårigheter och stora utmaningar framför sej, ni är i mina tankar.

I know that we are well into the new year, but I just wanted to wish everyone a very blessed and happy 2012! This new year was spent in Turku, taking it VERY easy with some friends. I had a great time!

Jag vet att jag är ganska sent ute, jag ville bara önska alla ett glatt och lyckligt 2012! Jag ringde in det nya året i Åbo tillsammans med två kompisar. Vi tog det riktigt lugnt, med god mat och gott sällskap blev det en riktigt super kväll!

Back in the Kingdom

We are back in the Kingdom after a 10 day long break. This time we decided to travel locally, so we headed off to Oman which was followed by a few days in Dubai. It wasn't a hardcore touristy holiday, some days we were just taking it easy - or chillaxing as we like to call it!

Vi är nu tillbaka i Saudien efter en 10-dagars resa till Oman och Dubai. Det var en ganska slapp semester, med en hel del tid för att bara koppla av. Medan vi var i Dubai träffade vi min goda vän C, vilket nog var höjdpunkten på resan!

Finland -week 3

 

Here are the photos from week 3 in Finland, this was the first week of July. July in Finland means holidays, many people take their 4 week annual leave during this month, as July usually has the best chances of good summer weather!

I spent most of this week at my parents place, not getting up to much. But this is where you could find me during this week:

- at the Turku Medieval Market, it's a great event and the organisers go all out to create the ambience of Turku in the Middle Ages. It takes place right on the doorstep of my old high school.
- catching up with my dad at his place of work; a boat that transports people around the area where my parents live
- admiring the scenery of this beautiful place where I grew up
- taking loads of pictures of my mother's cats, this is Peggy taking a nap
- spotting deers at dusk, got a photo of where they had been standing a minute earlier...
- spending a lovely evening with my friend C, we had dinner in Naantali
- taking loads of pictures of my mother's flowers, during the summer months she runs a gardening business and she is good at what she does!

Här kommer sent om sider bilder från vecka tre i Finland. Den här veckan var jag mest hemma på holmen och tog det lugnt! Jag höll mej upptagen med följande:

- Åbo Medeltida Marknad, ett jättebra evenemang enligt mej! Samtidigt en runda i gamla studiekvarter eftersom mitt gamla gymnasium ligger precis previd torget där marknaden äger rum.
- hälsade på pappa på hans arbetsplats; en av båtarna som trafikerar i Åbolands skärgård
- beundrade landskapet och känner fortfarande stor tacksamhet för att jag fick tillbringa min barndom just här
- tog en massa foton av mammas katter, Peggy tar sej en tupplur
- bonga en hjort efter solnedgången, den blev inte på bild men jag tog ett foto av var den stod
- tillbringade en kväll med min goda vän C, det blev middag i Nådendal och en massa tjejsnack
- tog en massa foton av mammas blommor, sommartid odlar hon blommor som hon sen säljer. Hon har den grönaste tumme jag nånsin sett!
