Remember how last year I was gushing about the Guinness World Record that was made in Nagu, Finland last year? Well, you can read about that here. Unfortunately that record has now been broken, and the new record was set nowhere else but in my current home town of Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia. The record we are talking about is that for the longest table.

Unfortunately I did not hear about the local attempt until after the fact, otherwise I would have been there for sure! The whole event did not quite materialise as planned as the sit down breakfast that was planned turned into a take away meal due to yet another dust storm... According to the organisers this record will create more awareness of the city of Al Khobar as a tourist destination. They even go as far as saying that it will strengthen the image of Saudi Arabia among global tourists. I wonder if that will indeed be the case, seeing that I live just a few kilometres from where this event took place, we even drove past the location on the day - there just was nothing there to indicate that this event would take place!

Needless to say, Saudi Arabia still has a long way to go before any part of this country becomes any kind of a tourist destination (religious tourism apart), but I will save this for another day...

Världsrekordet för det längsta bordet tillhör inte mera lilla Nagu i Finland. Istället har min nuvarande hemstad Al Khobar här i Saudi Arabien nappat det! Detta hände under den gångna helgen (vårt veckoslut är är torsdag & fredag), det gamla rekordet slogs med dryga 13 meter. Hela evenemanget gick mej totalt förbi trots att jag bor ett par kilometer från platsen där det ägde rum. Dessutom körde vi förbi platsen på samma dag som evenemanget arrangerades (och flera gånger under veckan före), men där fanns inget som indikerade att ett frukostbord för 600 personer skulle sättas upp! Dessutom slutade det hela med att ingen faktiskt åt vid bordet, eftersom en sandstorm gjorde att morgonmålet måste serverars som en "take away" måltid.


Trots det så anser arrangörerna att detta världsrekord kommer att sätta staden på världskartan och att det kommer att få internationella turister att öppna sina ögon för Al Khobar som destination! Min personliga åsikt är att Saudiarabien nog måste försöka lite mer om dom vill locka turister hit, i alla fall de som besöker landet av andra orsaker än för att idka religiös turism. Men det är ett ämne som jag nog får spara till en annan gång...

Looooong table

What are they up to back home in Finland? Not too far from where my parents live they are busy breaking world records. I got the news already yesterday but was to busy to post. My friend reported that it had been made official by the Guinness Book of World Records: the longest table is in Nagu and it measures 163.58 metres and 5 millimetres. My friend who was involved with the arrangements of this event told me that it took them 7 hours just to arrange the chairs around the table!

Just to put the whole event into perspective, the are where this event was held has a population of approx 1500 people. So an event on this scale is quite something!

At our place we were keeping things a bit more low key and had some friends over for dinner, there were 8 of us around the table.

I Finland, närmare bestämt i Åboland, så håller sej folk sysselsatta med att bryta världsrekord. Vad annars? Igår rapporterade min kompis att det nu var officiellt, världens längsta bord finns i Nagu. Bordet mäter 163.58 meter och 5 millimeter och rekordet har bekräftats av en officiell domare för Guinness Rekordbok. Min kompis var med om att arrangera detta event och hon berättade att det tog ungefär sju timmar att ställa stolarna på plats!


Samtidigt åt vi middag med några vänner i betydligt mindre skala, vi hade 8 personer vid bordet.
