Remember how last year I was gushing about the Guinness World Record that was made in Nagu, Finland last year? Well, you can read about that here. Unfortunately that record has now been broken, and the new record was set nowhere else but in my current home town of Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia. The record we are talking about is that for the longest table.

Unfortunately I did not hear about the local attempt until after the fact, otherwise I would have been there for sure! The whole event did not quite materialise as planned as the sit down breakfast that was planned turned into a take away meal due to yet another dust storm... According to the organisers this record will create more awareness of the city of Al Khobar as a tourist destination. They even go as far as saying that it will strengthen the image of Saudi Arabia among global tourists. I wonder if that will indeed be the case, seeing that I live just a few kilometres from where this event took place, we even drove past the location on the day - there just was nothing there to indicate that this event would take place!

Needless to say, Saudi Arabia still has a long way to go before any part of this country becomes any kind of a tourist destination (religious tourism apart), but I will save this for another day...

Världsrekordet för det längsta bordet tillhör inte mera lilla Nagu i Finland. Istället har min nuvarande hemstad Al Khobar här i Saudi Arabien nappat det! Detta hände under den gångna helgen (vårt veckoslut är är torsdag & fredag), det gamla rekordet slogs med dryga 13 meter. Mera om evenemanget i Saudiarabien kan ni läsa här och om Nagurekordet skrev jag tidigare om här.


Hela evenemanget gick mej totalt förbi trots att jag bor ett par kilometer från platsen där det ägde rum. Dessutom körde vi förbi platsen på samma dag som evenemanget arrangerades (och flera gånger under veckan före), men där fanns inget som indikerade att ett frukostbord för 600 personer skulle sättas upp! Dessutom slutade det hela med att ingen faktiskt åt vid bordet, eftersom en sandstorm gjorde att morgonmålet måste serverars som en "take away" måltid.


Trots det så anser arrangörerna att detta världsrekord kommer att sätta staden på världskartan och att det kommer att få internationella turister att öppna sina ögon för Al Khobar som destination! Min personliga åsikt är att Saudiarabien nog måste försöka lite mer om dom vill locka turister hit, i alla fall de som besöker landet av andra orsaker än för att idka religiös turism. Men det är ett ämne som jag nog får spara till en annan gång...

A year ago today

It has been a year since we left Australia in order to start our adventure in the Middle East. It's incredible how fast the past year has gone. While Australia is not the my native country, there are things that I do miss.

My friends would come first on the list, it took me a while to develop a network of friends in Australia, and just as I had done that it was time to leave.

I also miss the Australian people in general, they are so easygoing and and friendly, whether you know them or not. Customer service in Australia is also something quite different to what you experience here, it just seems people are not really committed and they do not care whether they have made you feel happy or not.

Parks. I used to laugh to myself, because in Australia, especially on the Gold Coast where we lived, they had parks everywhere. Big and small. If there was a just a small patch of grass, a bench and a tree it would be called a park! These parks would be clean, really clean. Over here there are very few parks and especially during the weekend they are not very clean because people leave their rubbish everywhere!

Nice, cozy coffee shops. The ones where you can sit for a looooong time because it really feels like an extension of our own living room. One of my favourites was Gov's Espresso, coffee shops here are mainly of the American/British franchise kind...

These are just a few things of the top of my head. I am hoping to go back to Australia for a visit at some point, but I have no idea when that would be...

Det är nu ett år sen vi flyttade från Australien till Mellanöstern. Ett år som har gått otroligt fort! Trots att Australien inte är mitt hemland är det en hel del saker som jag saknar. Främst av allt mina vänner, men också det australiensiska folket över huvudtaget.


Jag saknar också alla fina, gröna, rena parker! Jag längtar också tillbaka till Australiens cafekultur. Det finns så många mysiga och trevliga cafeer, men här i Saudiarabien får man nöja sej med "stämningen" som erbjuds av ett amerikanst/brittiskt franchiseföretag...


Jag hoppas att vi gör ett besök till Australien i något skede, men just nu är det inte aktuellt tyvärr. Det finns ju en massa andra ställen man vill se!

Canada

It's nearly to the day a month since we got back from Canada, so it's 'bout time that I post some photos I think!

The weather was a bit of a mixed bag, rain, sunshine and to my husbands delight... snow. I will never forget the look on his face when he saw his first snow fall :)

Niagara Falls was impressive, especially the Canadian side.

We went for the motor show. Now how many "good wife" points do I get for that?!

Introduced my hubby to some winter sports, this was his second attempt at ice skating. We went during lunch time and it was fun to see people from the nearby business district come for a quick run on the ice during their lunch breaks dressed in their corporate attire.

I call this "Human Hippo on Ice"!

Äntligen lite bilder från vår Kanadaresa. Vi tog det ganska lugnt cch turistade inte så mycket. En svängom till Niagara Falls måste man ju inkludera och så lite vintersport. Det blev både slalom och skrinning för min man! Och så var vi på bilmässa, det får man väl lite pluspoäng för, i synnerhet när man är gravid i sjunde månaden!

Scandinavian Sunday: summer flowers

I missed out on posting something last Sunday - sorry! That's what you get for not scheduling these recurring posts...

Lately we have had more than our fair share of dust storms coming our way. I know, I know, that's what you get for moving to a land that is 90% sand (don't quote me on this figure!)... The problem is that the sand and dust does not stay outside, those tiny specks make their way through the smallest crack under the door. Leaving the window open even the slightest (in hope of fresh air) means that the dust will soon be covering all kitchen counter tops and any other horizontal surface! I have never ever in my life been so well acquainted with my dust cloth.

This dust that covers everything in it's way makes for a very dull scenery, so today I thought I'd share some pictures of Finnish flora. As you can imagine there is very limited greenery over here so just seeing these photos is somehow very comforting to me!

T.o.m. en tistla ser vacker ut tycker jag!

Vi har haft en hel del sandstormar (egentligen är det väl fint damm) här på sistone. Små, små korn som flyger omkring och får det att knastra i tänderna om man är dum nog att gå ut! Damm som inte nöjer sej med att hållas utomhus, utan också klämmer sej in genom minsta springa i dörren eller fönstret. Små, små korn som får hela huset att se ut som om man inte torkat damm på evigheter fastän man gjorde det för några timmar sedan! 


Tänkte därför dela med mej av lite finländsk grönska istället. Det är så skönt att se på dessa foton och drömma om den finländska sommaren. Här har vi ju ganska begränsat med grönska, vilket får mej att tycka att till och med en tistel är riktigt vacker!
