Queensland floods - the aftermath

While the flood waters have subsided, a lot of people have to come to terms with all the mess that the muddy waters left behind.  It is great to see that people are coming together, and thousands of volunteers are pitching in to help those who need it. Unfortunately there are also, albeit very few, disturbed people out there. People who are looting, people trying to scam those who have lost everything they own...


The floods are affecting other areas of the state in different ways. Many supermarkets in the area I live have very little or no fruit and vegetable for sale as the wholesalers storage facilities became flooded. i have seen McDonald's close down as no stock has been delivered. But all this is nothing compared to what other people are going through.

It will take years for the region to return back to what it was. But the Queenslanders are determined to keep the spirits high and make it happen. In the words of the Queensland premier Anna Bligh "As we weep for what e have lost and as we grieve for family friends and we confront the challenge that is before us, I want us to remember who we are. We are Queenslanders"

Översvämningarna är över och städningsarbetet har satt igång. Många har mist allt lösöre i deras hem. Hustak, trädgårdar, simbassänger är täckt av ett tjockt lager av lera. Men när allt ser ut som värts så kommer det bästa ur människorna. Folk har rest från när och fjärran för att erbjuda sin hjälp med at städa upp. Många har donerat kläder, husgeråd och husrum. Tyvärr finns det alltid några få som försöker utnyttja en tragedi till deras egen personliga gagn. Det har rapporterats om plundring och svindlare som försöker lura åt sej pengar från dem som inte har någonting kvar...


Men Queensländarna ger inte upp så lätt, och det arbetas hårt för att få livet att återgå till det normala så fort som möjligt. Men det kommar att ta månader, och i vissa fall år innan allt återgår till situationen före översvämningarna.


Följderna har börjat sprida sej utanför de drabbade områdena. Frukt och grönsaker är numera en bristavara på butiskhyllorna. Höromdagen såg jag att en MacDonald's hade tvingats stänga eftersom dom inte fått råvaror leverarade. Men allt det är inget jömfört med det som många andra måste tampas med.
