I still call it the Opera House

Over the past week Australia has been hit by Oprah-mania. The talk show host is in town jetsetting all over the country. Newspapers have been filled with headlines somehow playing with the name Oprah I think one headline included the word Oprahrama. During her stay she will be filming her show at the Opera House in Sydney, hence the buildings nick name has now become `the Oprah House`. No offence to Oprah, but I find this just ridiculous. How can you nick name one of the worlds most ingenious and daring piece of architecture after a talk show host?! Maybe it's just me, but it had to be said.

On that note, I will be going to Sydney this weekend and will most definitely spend some time admiring this structure, the trip would just not be complete without it.

Den senaste veckan har Australien drabbats av Oprah-feber. Varje dag berättas det i nyheterna vad hon har gjort idag, hon flyger ju land och rike runt i sin privata jet (jag undrar om hon kompenserar för koldioxidutsläppen).  Under tiden som Oprah är här kommer hon att filma sin show på Operahuset i Sydney. Men nuförtiden kallas byggnaden mest `the Oprah House` (Oprah huset). Jag har inget emot Oprah, men dethär tycker jag e löjligt! Att ge denna underbara, ståtliga byggnad ett smeknamn efter en TV personlighet är för mej ofattbart! Men högst antagligen är det bara hos mej som dethär nya smeknamnet väcker starka känslor.


Denhär helgen åker jag på blixtvist till Sydney, och kommer definitivt att slänga långa drömmande blickar i riktning mot Operahuset. Kanske ta en bild eller två ;)

Secret Santa

At work we have the Secret Santa thing going on. For those who are not familiar with the concept I will explain it briefly, because this was something new to me. Basically you draw a name from a hat (or whatever) and you will buy that person a gift according to a set budget. The person who you bought the gift for will not know who it`s from. Our budget is set at 20 dollars and I am buying for a colleague my age. Easy, you`d think. But I can tell you it`s not. Have to come up with something by tomorrow as I need to bring the gift in on Thursday. I think it`s time to consult my friend google.com for ideas. Last resort will be something boring like a box of chocolates...

Hemliga tomten, eller vad tusan man ska kalla det, finns den traditionen i Finland? Här i Australien existerar konceptet på de flesta arbetsplatser. Idén går ut på att man drar ett namn ur en hatt och ska då köpa en julgåva åt den personen. I vårt fall ska gåvan kosta kring 20 dollar och jag ska köpa en gåva åt en av mina kollegor som är ungefär lika gammal som jag. Det verkar enkelt, men så e de inte. Kanske ske de ha varit enklare om jag hade planerat lite bättre och lite tidigare. Nu ska jag på nåt vis lyckas hitta en present imorgon. Butikerna stänger klockan fem och jag slutar jobbet klockan fem. Det blir nog att googla och se om jag snubblar över någo passande och lätt tillgängliga grejer. Men just nu ser det ut som om det blir en låda choklad eller någo sånt. Super tråkigt jag vet!

Happy Independence Day!

There`s syttende mai, fourth of July, Bastille Day - you name it and it`s a big party. In Australia an excuse to have a barbeque party will do, so on January 26 the smoke is thick in the air. Cars, boats, prams and dogs will all be draped in the Australian flag.

Us Finns take celebrations more seriously, the same goes for our Independence Day which is today, December 6. There are no street parties or big fanfares. Instead we light two candles in our windows. The president throws a decent party though. This Independence Day Ball is attended by the who`s who of Finnish society, the rest of us will be sitting at home commenting on the gowns and hairstyles.

Happy Independence Day everyone!

Den 6 december är inte nån festival precis, i synnerhet när man jämför med andra länders firande. För oss finnar räcker de me två ljus i fönstret och presidentbalen på TV. Man vill ju alltid se vad det e Janina Andersson ha på sej!


I Australien firas den 26 januari med grillfest, bilar, båtar, barnvagnar och hundar dekoreras med den australiensiska flaggan. I Brisbane arrangeras det till och med tävling for kackerlackor, urk!

Sunday

I know it`s Monday, but because there`s very few reasons to like Mondays I like to remember my Sunday instead.

Sunday was my only day off last week. I think I managed to fit in so many things in one day, leisurely breakfast, a walk on the beach, a new hand bag and cinnamon rolls...


Visserligen e de måndag idag, men jag tycker int att de är något speciellt me måndagar så istället tänker jag ej tillbaka till söndagen.


Söndagen var min enda lediga dag förra veckan, men jag lyckades hinna med en massa saker på en dag. Det blev en lugn frukost, en promenad på stranden, en ny handväska och kanelbullar...

213 days/dagar

 Ännu 213 dagar och sen e de semestertider! Jag ser så fram emot att träffa min familj och mina vänner!


Another 213 days an then it is holiday time!!! I can`t wait to see my family and my friends!

Living green

This week is the national recycling week. I would love to do my part, but sometimes it`s a bit hard. I`ll tell you why.

For starters, our building does not have a recycling bin. Which means that we either have to throw recyclable material in the usual bin or use the neighbours recycling bin. You can probably guess which option I have chosen. In addition to that, there`s no incentive to recycle bottles or soda cans. Back home you get paid (albeit a very minute amount) for every bottle that you bring back. No such system exists here, except for the state of South Australia. But somehow that idea did not take in other parts of the country...

But plenty of people in my area are doing their part. So far this year on the Gold Coast more than 46 000 tonnes of waste has been recycled. That`s a lot more than I would have thought!
